I love this song. Childhood memories. I love the band. I saw Depeche Mode a few years ago when they were promoting Exciter and of course they sang this song. I love Dave Gahan's voice.

This whole song is based upon a personal jesus... Someone you feel a direct connection with. Ala when you pray, etc. A divine intervention or being that our human minds cannot comprehend.. It is all about the personal connection to faith. Be it Christianity, Muslim, Judaism,etc. This song is touching upon all beliefs of "faith" a higher power... Remember... Geography is destiny. Faith is a personal feeling.

I don't think it has anything to do with hypocrisy or religion. i think it's about a purely sexual relationship, or perhaps sex addiction.....trying to find comfort, companionship, something, in sex.

David Gahan once said that Anton Corbjin had a "twisted sexual mind." I never thought, however, that the message of this video was sexual, in spite of its setting. I always thought it was about religious hypocrisy, considering all of its religious symbolism. As a religious person myself, I can say there really are hypocrites out there.
