"Dark Cabaret" I think is how they described it.I forgot the exact phrase what they used but they were trying to get away from a "Gothic Poetry" type genre with their music so they created their own subgenre in Rock.

I think they call it Brechtian punk caberet! Amanda Palmer came up with the name because she wanted to avoid them being labelled as gothic.Their music is heavily influenced by 1930's and 1940's German caberet. Berholt Brecht was an avant-garde German theatre director and would have been active at that time and that's where the brechtian part comes from.
