I think it is fascinating how far they sailed and in what conditions. I heard that some of them sailed as far as Constantinobel.

Eirik Raude or Eirik The Red founded the first Nordic settlement in Greenlandin 985. He was Born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway. But That was long time after the other Norwegian Ingólfur Arnarson, founded the Icelandic settlements. Greenland settlements vanished during the 14th and 15th centuries, likely due to famine and increasing conflicts with the Inuits.

I hear them talking about cars with hydrogen and a rechargeable battery (plugged). So you can use the battery for shorter distance and hydrogen for longer distances. It is very viable and feasible. I think they already have those cars. We will probably see it in couple of years.

Maybe you could say it worked because all the vikings that tried to settle in in Greenland died out.
saevaroa (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
You are only half joking I think because. Iceland was first called snowland because all they could see first was snow. And where they settle first in in Greenland is in east part and on a very small area there there used to be a green place. So they both got their names from a relatively small areas. Or isolated circumstances. But I like better the story of the vikings that became farmers in Iceland calling it those names to divert other viking attackers to Greenland.

Aha...now I understand, what you mean. That could actually be a good idea, but I don't think it worked, since both Iceland and Greenland was discovered and settled by Vikings. Im sure Ingólfur Arnarson and his fellow Viking people, Knew what they was dealing with. They were busy as you know. Adminstrate Northern Great Britain and found Dublin + raid rest of western europe, but also help their Swedish viking brothers in raids eastwards

No you misunderstand me. The naming of Iceland and Greenland was designed in a way to bluff the vikings to go to Greenland. Wether it worked or not is not the case. Just the fact that it was dont to fool potential attackers. There are stories about vikings sailing to greenland and as far as america. I never said that Greenlanders that is the eskimos were vikings. The vikings did not settle in in greenland. They died out. And no one knows why. Maybe because they could not tolerate the cold

"Iceland is not and will never be bankrupt (It's literally impossible)"Then all the news must be wrong? And why must They loan money then?
brassas (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Greenlenders aren't they eskimos? I don't think we can call them vikings

'Saevaroa', that is as good an explanation as any I've heard. Beside, a 'bit of deception and mimickry has frequently been used to aid survival both in Nature and in Human societies. Canada for example originally meant a lowly village in one of the native tribe's tongue. Too bad that the French and later English explorers didn't understand the word, and conquered the whole continent regardless. :DAs they say; sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. |
