Tom Lehrer - The Vatican Rag

Over the years a lot of people have been offended by this song, also on YouTube. Now you can read Tom Lehrer's own introduction to the song, given to The Music Show in Australia when he was interviewed on the telephone a few years ago:- - -Another big news story of the year (1965) concerned the Ecumenical Council in Rome, known as Vatican II. Among the things they did, in an attempt to make the church more commercial, was to introduce the vernacular into portions of the mass to replace Latin, and to widen somewhat the range of music permissible in the liturgy. But I feel that if they really want to sell the product in this secular age, what they ought to do is to re-do some of the liturgical music in popular song forms. I have a modest example here. It's called The Vatican Rag...- - -Lehrer said "OK" to "The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel" on YouTube, as long as the performance is not altered and as long as it's free in the YouTube flash video format. Do NOT ask for any video originals, ever again.Click on the Lehrer icon and visit the channel's front page. The channel is Lehrer only. Brilliant! For a 50's comedian his worldview's pretty sharp today.

I beg your pardon but an idea's longevity has no bearing on it's truth or validity. Objective *history* points to all religions being nothing more than plagiarisms, hybridizations, mutations and all combinations and mixtures of those three, yet I doubt you would *believe* so, despite the evidence.

He has the right idea. When we cannot poke fun at ourselves then there is something wrong. I mean, this PC thing goes way too far. It takes criticism to highlight what is wrong. Also, it takes strength to show it up and work on it.And it is a great song.He ridicules the cold war, and people are hardly going to criticize that.

Christianity is a plagerized patchwork of pagan religions that go back thousands of years and that have, themselves, survived thousands of years at the time. Virgin births, astrological predictions, crucifixions, 3 wise men visits, blah blah. All of these absurdities are old hat. The true absurdity is that a rational, reasonable human being would be deluded by this nonsense in the twenty first century.

Yes, you "get it". The first shall be last and the last shall be first. Absolutely absurd. And yet, it has endured for 2000 years - along with the family, the only human social structure that has perdured for more than twenty centuries. Why is this? Could it possibly be that there is such a thing as objective Truth...? Absurd.

If you're a traditional Catholic who loves the TLM you hear this song, shake your head, and laugh. Lehrer is on point. Even he can see how the mass was changed to be commercialized.

Same here. Although I have to resist the urge to mutter '2, 4, 6, 8...' when Mass starts.

Ah religion, idiots and liars are welcome here.

Golly yeah, couldn't agree with you more!'Lord, we really, really want to praise you'... fine, get on and PRAISE, don't just drearily bleat about WANTING to! Can't stand the milksop modern 'worship' music.
