Mental Health Liberation and Anti-Psychiatry Movement Part 1

Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist talks about the mental health liberation movement, the anti-psychiatry movement, the movement against psychiatric oppression. Sometimes seen as antipsych or antipsychiary or anti-biological psychiatry. This is a movement made up mostly of ex-mental health consumers and the family members of ex-mental health consumers who feel they have been damaged by psychiatry. These people refer to themselves as psychiatric survivors. There are also several medical and mental health professionals that reject the belief system of biological psychiatry Links The Coalition for the Abolition of Electroshock in Texas http://www.endofshock.com Able Child Parents for Label and Drug Free Eduction http://www.ablechild.org Law Project for Psychiatric Rights http://www.psychrights.org MindFreedom International http://www.mindfreedom.org ECT dot org The Committee for Truth in Psychiatry http://www.ect.org Psychiatrist Peter Breggin's website http://www.breggin.com International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology http://www.icspp.org International Coalition for Drug Awareness Ann Blake Tracy http://www.drugawareness.org Citizen's Commission on Human Rights International http://www.cchr.org Al Siebert's website http://resiliencycenter.com Chipmunka Publishing (specializes in books by psychiatric survivors) http://chipmunkapublishing.co.... That's a good point, I suppose "cure" isn't the appropriate termonology to describe the use of psychiatric medications. That said, I think it's a stretch to advocate that they're useless, right? I don't pretend to know, in all honestly, but my inclination is that these medications can pull people out of "ruts" they might be in, just like flu-medication, pain killers, other such medications are used to HELP you through a difficult experience (not cure it). Your thoughts?

Psychiatry is a practice with about 350 mental disorder it's diagnoses and basically five categories of drugs. Antipsychotics - slow down the CNSAmphetamines - speed up the CNS Anxiety medications - Inhibit stress responseAntidepressants - Honestly, scientist don't knows exactly what these do. Anticonvulsants - slow down the CNS All disorders are treated with one more of these drugs.

No psychiatric medications do not cure the problem. They suppress (to a greater or lessor degree) they symptoms. Like taking a pain killer for a broken leg, it drug covers up the pain but does absolutely nothing to help the broken leg heal. Or Like taking over-the-counter flu remedies, they alter the body's response so you don't have a runny nose but it does nothing to attack the virus causing the problem.

You do have some very interesting points. I don't think you're wrong, but I don't necessarily think you're totally correct. I do believe that psychiatric illnesses *do* exist. Maybe I am wrong (seriously), but I believe it's been proven that lack of certain hormones / neurotransmitters / etc. can lead to mental illness. These medications, do cure these problems don't they? Maybe your point is, people "want to believe" that they have a label, so they have an easy way out?

According to Thomas Szasz an institution based on falsities can not be reformed, it needs to be abolished, and I agree with him.For example I am what many people would call depressed, pessimist and so on. While they contend that I "need help" I contend that no, I have the right to stay as I am, to stick to my sel identity and take my so called symptoms as part of my understanding of the world good or bad. Therefore I am not "suffering", I am just different and somehow like it. Thanks.

Not all psychiatrists are drug dosing nuts, but perhaps the majority is. The drugs also may or may not cause dependency, the major problem being that it's said that they don't cause any problem related to dependency at all.

No. The mental health system doesn't need to disappear, it needs to be reformed. Medications have a place in acute care. Obviously if someone is bashing their head against a wall, a tranquilizer could be appropriate. To date, none of the psychiatric medications actually cure the disorders and when chronically used the side effects often result in organ damage and early death.

wait is this movement to rid of all psychiatrist? U no if that happened It would be putting a lot of people on the streets. And another question would be if you had a patient with an Xtrem case would you not want to medicate that patient?
