Tom Waits became something of a caricature in the mid seventies. He'd be the first to admit it. It started out as performance art, but after time he seems to have become one with his act (in public at least). What you miss, Mr. Daddysquirrel, with your pseudo-authoritative offhand dismissal is Waits' incredible sense of poetry and ability to capture the beauty in Americana like no one else. By using this avatar, he's found more truth and touched more hearts in a real sense than you can know.

Excuse me, but have you even heard him speak? He talks like that, that'll be what smoking does to you m'dear. Grow up please, leaving pathetic comments on amazing artists profiles won't make you a better singer. Perhaps you should conerntrate on getting to be as amazing as Tom Waits and people may actually start listening instead of laughing at you.

I found the laughter a bit off putting as well. I don't think they got the song...but Tom seemed to enjoy them laughing, so whatever.
