Doug Rogers Judo Documentary, [Part 1]

n the summer of 1965 Doug Rogers joined the All Japan University Championships as a member of the Takudai team and helped them bring the winner's penant back to Takudai for the first time in many years. Not only was Doug the first foreigner to take part in this tournament, he was also named as best fighter in the tournament."One more year," Kimura had told him, "and there will be no opponents left for you to beat." But Doug Rogers did not have one more year. Judo brought a degree of fame in Japan but no fortune, and unlike the more flexible working world of today, people had to build a career when young. He had attained his private pilot's license at the age of 16 and had always hoped to be a professional pilot. At the ripe old age of 24 the clock was ticking and Doug chose to return to Canada to pursue his career as a pilot. (From; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D... )

Why so unlikely???

I'd have to do some research but it doesn't interest me enough to put time and energy into it. But, again, it seems unlikely that Doug was the only Westerner Kimura ever taught...

Name another???

There's no doubt that he reached a level many will never reach. I wonder if he was the_only_Westerner that Kimura ever taught. It seems unlikely...

The only westerner Kimura ever taught ... makes him a legend in my book. The fact he is Canadian helps too.

"If you train for three hours a day and become champion, you should immediately start training six hours a day."

I used to train at UBC dojo in Vancouver, CAN and Doug and his son used to come by. Doug was always very nice to me and one time laughed at me for doing randori after somone had ripped one of my sleeves off. By the way, anyone know some good tai sabaki for uchimata entries?
