The 22 LR is actually the same caliber (bullet diameter) as the 223 Remington, just a different cartridge. A new upper for a 22 LR or a 17 HR or HMR. An AR-15 upper includes the barrel, all that is needed to convert a centerfire AR-15 to a rimfire is a new 22 LR or 17 HR upper. You can't convert an existing .223 to a rimfire 22LR without serious, expensive custom work; requiring lots of upper parts, from the firing pin assembly, to the bolt, to the extractor, to the chamber to be replaced.
