That's like saying there is no point in learning how to draw because computers can make up for a lack of skill. He isn't talking about sticking to the old ways, he's talking about knowing your roots and building that foundation. Where is the harm in knowing the bases of a martial arts?

The reason why most old ways become old ways is because intelligent people develop new ways that are better. =P It's called advancement buddy.

Kata is the essence of training. Yes, it builds strength and character, but it's main purpose is muscle memory. Training your muscles to react to situations. Too many martial artists have abandoned the old ways and will never achieve their full potential. Kata is the encyclopedia of a karate system. All of the techniques are there! This is a good kata, of Okinawan origin, likely from Naha or Tomari. The hard/soft of goju are present. Not one of USA Goju katas, but that was limited to PU

I have just re-started studying Goju Ryu after almost 20 years. Obviously started back at white belt, but grading for blue maybe purple after about 4 months. Its so much more fascinating now that I am older and arguably wiser. But I s'pose thats true in most things in life.

I also train this style of karate and it is amazing. Now not saying that its the single best style because there of course is no such thing, but this style helped me become a strong person not just a strong fighter.

Depends on style...

I totally agree with you. I'm a Karateka at this style too. I loved it and still do XP |
