I love the fluidity of the jo. The entire staff is usable as both an offensive and a defensive tool. I read somewhere that the jo was the product of a 10 year retreat by a kendo master who wanted to devise a method to defeat a master swordsman, and he came up with the jo to merge the yari and bokken into one weapon.

Basically the length; the jo is typically about 4" (120cms) and the bo is about 6" (180 cms). That probably also leads to differences in how you would use them, but I have never practised with the bo, so I can't comment on that. Hope this helps.

I've praticed Jo staff a little in my weapon class. I find it a lot easier to use than Bo staff because it's lighter, faster and takes less place to swing. We've just covered the basics but I like to pratice this weapon at home ^^ |
