simple way to explain this... The water will get to low and the boats will get stuck... The way it works.... (for whoever wants to know)in every sluice there are slides. if u want to fern into a sluice, the water in the lake and sluice needs to be the same level.. (duh) That is controlled by the slides.. they can let water come out (so the level in the sluice rises) or let water get in (letting the water leven in the sluice drop) Really easy.. Hope this explains it to you

It is to control the water in the lakes. if there where no (I didn't knew the word but some translation site came up with the word Locks, Sluice-lock or just sluice. In holland it's called Sluis) So back to the story... if there where no Sluices the water in the lakes is not controlable and it would just flow into the occean.. so in this way the water in the lake is higher than the sea and boats are able to travel (if the sluices where not there the boats will get stuck on the ground for the
