Karate is used mainly in longer distance which is why they strike with the foot. Muay thai is used in closer distance hence the shin and elbows. But it is the fighter NOT the martial art. Any martial art can be deadly in the hands of a well trained and athletic person. Do not underestimate anyone and do not underestimate the kicking versitality of shotokan. tho getting a shin kick to the liver can be devastating as well.

still the best style i've seen for 1 on 1 fights is a boxer trained in BJJ. But shotokan karate w/BJJ isn't a bad combo either or muay thai w/BJJ. I think lyoto has an excellent style becuase he has the evasiveness and versitality of Shotokan's numerous strikes with the close quarters combat ability of muay thai and the gorund fighting options of bjj. Muay thai and karate can't fairly be compared because they're both used at different stages of unarmed combat.

Muay thai is good. But Shotokan Karate isn't bad either. The MT rounhouse kick is ecellent in sheer power BUT it does leave the user off balance and when you spin you leave your back to your opponent. NOT GOOD lol. Any "street" guy would take advantage of that. The karate round house kick is alot faster at sending you back to your balanced fighting postition after throwing it. One should master BOTH kind of kicks. And the side kicks, and the back kicks from shotokan are bad ass too.
