A good indicator that the company you are using to rent that truck from would have a list on "how to properly pack for your move" that they can give you. If they do take it, read it and pass it along to a friend.
Second, you can save yourself time, energy and a lot of undue stress just by using proper packing supplies and materials. You will not only be saving energy from running around gathering cheap unsporting boxes, but your saving yourself stress from worrying if your stuff will break while in transit because of that fact.
You can go on line and purchase appropriate boxes made durable specifically made for moving household and personal items. You can get large boxes for stereos, flat screen TV's, stemware and lingerie and wardrobe boxes and smaller boxes for books and bulky items. The last thing you want to do is have to go out and spend money unnecessarily to replace these items due to improper packing. You can always return unused boxes so don't be afraid to buy too many.
Don't laugh at this one, but tape is very important when packing boxes for a move. The kind of tape does matter. This is an item that should be of good quality and have plenty rolls of it. For apartments and smaller homes just one roll is not enough. You can get that as well from a supply store and if you have unused rolls they can be returned as well. You might want to invest in a tape dispenser to make the job of sealing boxes easier and faster as well as Bubble wrap, foam peanuts, and blankets provide excellent protection for items you don't want damaged.
Last but not least, invest in a good marker to mark the contents of the boxes. You should also keep an inventory list of how many boxes you have and from what room they came from and what rooms they will be going to I your new place. This is a great system
