Rome is one of the oldest cities in the world. It has a long and rich history dating back as many as 2,700 years. It has been continuously inhabited and has been an important center, first as the headquarters of the Roman Empire and later as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.

They say that Rome was not built in a day and it is therefore fitting that it cannot be seen in a day either. If you are planning a trip to Rome, you should know that if you plan a long stay, you will not run out of sights to see and attractions to visit. If you are planning to only be in Rome for a limited amount of time, make sure that you plan your trip well so that you make it to as many of the main attractions as you can.

Rome is full of contrasts it juxtaposes its ancient history with a modern city. It is a bustling, loud metropolis that contains quiet parks and hidden piazzas. Make sure to visit some of these piazzas as the squares in Rome are one of its main attractions. Some of the famous piazzas of Rome are Piazza del Campidoglio that is home to the Italian government, Piazza Venezia that is considered to be the heart of the city, Piazza Navona that offers an example of awesome Baroque architecture, Piazza di Spagna that contains the famous Spanish Steps and St. Peter's Square that provides access to St. Peter's Basilica.

You cannot visit Rome without going to see the Roman basilicas and churches. Rome contains approximately 19 basilicas and many of them are worth seeing. Also on your must-see list should be the Coliseum. It is the largest structure of its sort from ancient Rome and is an amazing sight to behold. The Roman Forum and the Pantheon are other examples of fascinating architecture from ancient Rome that should not be missed. Simply walking around the streets of Rome will give you an excellent view into past times. The many fountains on the streets of Rome are a real treat to see.

There are many museums and galleries throughout Rome. Rome itself is considered the greatest open air museum in Europe; however the museums that are contained in buildings are also worth a visit. The Vatican Museum and the Capitoline Museum have excellent collections of Renaissance and Baroque sculptures and paintings. There are many other excellent museums.

There are many hotels throughout Rome. Bed and breakfasts are a relatively new addition to holiday accommodation options in Rome, but they are becoming more popular. Hostels and dormitories are among the cheapest accommodations options in Rome. For a bit more privacy and space, you should consider a rental apartment. These come in many sizes and prices, including luxury villas. If you are looking for something unique to Rome, you can stay in a Catholic convent. These often open their doors to tourists as long as they are prepared to abide by the rules of the convent.
