Most hotels in Berlin will automatically include a breakfast buffet in the price. If you are staying in a hostel which may cost you as little as 9 Euros per night, or staying in a self catering apartment you will probably not have breakfast included but, certainly in a hostel, will most probably be able to get breakfast at an extra cost.
If however you are staying in one of the thousands of Berlin hotels ranging from 35 euros a night up to hundreds of euros a night you will be astounded by the spread of meats, cheeses, breads, and cooked products. The operative word when it comes to food in Berlin must be meat- you'll see it everywhere!
Berlin is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe, so the truth is that you can find whatever your taste buds are craving. When walking down the street and wanting to grab a bite, you will find good old German food. And what is good old German food? You've got it- sausages, sausages, sausages. Even if you don't want a sausage, the chances are that what you do want comes wrapped in one, so there's nothing you can do about it!
If you do have time to stop and eat there are a few Berlin specialties that local chiefs have devised to get away from the reputation of stodgy food. Particularly recommended is Entenbraten mit Kraut; a duck dish served with new potatoes, cabbage and an aromatic sauce. Alternatively the Ochsenschwanz mit Lendenfilet, Oxtail with Sirloin steak served with spring vegetables is wonderful. Particularly special in Berlin are dishes with wild mushrooms, crayfish and river eels. For something a bit simpler however, the kartoffelsuppe or potato soup is always a winner, as is veal or pork knuckle with cabbage.
Moving on to drinks beer is the most popular drink in Germany, but French wines can also be seen in abundance and drunk regularly. Whilst the Germans do not make their own wine, they do make their own beers and the do it incredibly well. Lagers are the most popular of beers in Berlin and may come either from a bottle or the tap. Now, a real must for all visitors to Berlin is the Berliner Weisse Mit Schuss.
Western men may feel a little self conscious drinking this due to its bright colors, but once you taste it there's no going back. The Berliner Weiss mit Schuss is basically a Berliner Weiss beer which is very light and newly-fermented creating a rather sour tasting beer. When, however, mixed with raspberry cordial or sweet woodruff syrup the combination is electric. The Raspberry makes a wonderful red fruity concoction, whilst the woodruff makes a fantastic green crisp flavor. Even if you don't try anything else new when in Berlin you must try this.
